It's a really cute story and has a great message at the end. It also teaches a few things about geography and personalities. It would be a great way to explain that you can be different but still be friends with someone.

Through brightly-colored, playful illustrations Erik Brooks demonstrates several opposites. In addition to the obvious opposites, like white and black, Brooks also shows how these two friends are different by contrasting things like their method of travel and their clothing choices. There is plenty to look at in each picture and the short sentences make it perfect for reading aloud to little ones.

There is great big Alex the polar bear from the Arctic who is friends with Zina, the tiny penguin from Antarctica. The book tells about their many differences with words and corresponding pictures.
But it also lets the reader know that total opposites can be very best friends. My five-year-old son picked this book out from the library last week. My son owns an interactive globe and he is fascinated by the Arctic and the Antarctic, and by polar bears and penguins, so this book was right up his alley. It was clever of the author to use the literal poles and the animals to show the opposites, and to carry the opposite theme right the way through the book until the animals reached a literal middle ground.

This time we didn't see the illustrations so I can't comment on those. There's a polar bear from the Arctic and a penguin from Antarctica. This book is about how opposite they are but how they can still meet in the middle the Equator. Today's story time was on opposites but I'd say this book is also about getting along with people who are different from us maybe even more so than teaching children opposites really.

Polar Opposites is a book about Alex and who is a polar bear and Zina who is a penguin. The book contrasts the penguin and polar bear. I would use this book in my classroom to teach adjectives. I would emphasize students that describing something allows the reader to visualize what you are talking about which adds to the literacy device of imagery.

Although these two animals are opposites, they are friends, who meet "in the middle" the Galapagos Islands each year. Colorful illustrations show the two friends planning, packing, and traveling both in different ways to meet each other.
